Proponents of visual media argue that films and video footage offer an immersive and accessible gateway into the past. They can vividly recreate the sights, sounds, and atmosphere of a bygone era, making history feel immediate and tangible, especially for those who find written texts dry or challenging. For periods where actual video records exist, such as from the late 19th century onwards, we gain an unmediated view of events, from the fashion and body language of people to the actual conditions on a battlefield or a city street. This visceral connection can spark a deep emotional engagement that parchment and ink may struggle to evoke.
However, the fundamental limitation of visual records is their inherent subjectivity and potential lack of depth. A documentary film is an edited interpretation, and a historical drama is often a fictionalised account prioritising narrative over factual accuracy. Written documents, on the other hand, provide the foundational bedrock of historical understanding. They offer the nuanced, first-hand perspectives found in diaries, letters, and legal contracts, which reveal the complex motivations, thoughts, and economic realities of individuals. Furthermore, for the vast expanse of human history predating the invention of the camera, written records are our only direct window into the minds of our ancestors. We could never understand the philosophical debates of Ancient Greece or the administrative intricacies of the Roman Empire through film alone; it is through their texts that these civilisations continue to speak to us.
